Comeback Season

Release Date: March 27, 2007

Tag Line: First down, second chance

Description: Bruce McCulloch's buddy comedy stars Ray Liotta and Shaun Sipos as a pair of unlikely friends. Liotta plays Walter Pearce, a man who ends up without a place to stay after a fight with his wife of 24 years (Glenne Headly). Walter then ends up in jail after an altercation with another man, and in the cell encounters Skylar Eckerman (Sipos), a promising football player who landed in the clink after a drinking binge. Eckerman worries for his future, as he has recently suffered a severe injury. Although Eckerman and Pearce share an uncomfortable history, the two bury the hatchet and soon are able to depend on each other. Comeback Season had its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

Running time: 110 minutes

Scoop Review

Plot: Walter tries to win back his family with the help of his fallen-from-glory football star neighbor. You see, Walter’s cheated on his wife with his secretary (how stupid . . . and cliché’ of him), and now his life is a living hell. Skylar, the football star, learns with Walter’s help that there’s hope and that he needs to summon the courage to get back his dream of being a football player.

Acting: Appropriate performances by Liotta and Headly.

Special Effects: None

Keep an Eye Out For. . .

  • Watching TV while sitting in the pool . . . silly, dumb jock.
  • Yoga teachers who give their female students books on tantric sex.

The Straight Scoop: There’s a good story here. It’s enjoyable, and I think people will like it. The characters are nothing original; however, they suit the film. I can only wonder if this would have been a theatrical release if Ben Stiller had been in the lead role, due to the fact that Liotta’s character is pummeled with a string of bad occurrences because of his infidelity. Not that he shouldn’t be tortured for cheating on his wife (sorry, guys—there is no excuse), but he gets blindsided and left with only his Sears credit card. I only make the Stiller comment because I think his characters and their situations are most excruciating, as we see with Walter. Skylar is both a likeable and hate-able character in this movie, the typical arrogant football quarterback who thinks the world revolves around him. If my son ever acts like he does, I’ll give him a football injury myself. But of course, Skylar’s character is evolving before us on the screen and learning his lessons on how not to be an #$%*@.

Recommendation: This is a good “date” movie or couple’s movie . . . I guess. I know that every woman who watches Comeback Season with her man will look over at him and swear that if he ever cheats on her, he won’t have it so easy. Because even though the blow is dealt hard to Walter, every woman wants to make sure that her revenge will be sweeter and more horrid than ever. “Hell hath no fury like the scorn of a woman.” (I guess if life was a straight-to-video release, that might be the tag line for some guys.) Good movie, good characters, good story, and a good ending.
