Incubus

Release Date: February 6, 2007

Tag Line: His dreams are your nightmares.

Description: Tara Reid (American Pie, Alone in the Dark) stars in a gruesome tale about a group of attractive young college students forced to seek shelter in an ominous abandoned factory after a car accident leaves them stranded. Lurking within is a vicious serial killer bringing new meaning to the term "deranged." Soon, though, the group — what's left of them — makes another shocking discovery. Inside a triple-locked, shatterproof glass cage is a mysterious coma patient who holds the key to their escape and, ultimately, their survival.

Running time: 89 minutes

Rating: Unrated

Scoop Review

Plot: The premise is semi-interesting, but the execution is terrible. The pacing of the film is incredibly slow for a horror movie. A Lot of walking around, a lot of gaping at things, and a lot of asking each other “What are we gonna do, what are we gonna do?” Just die, that’s what, so I can do some laundry. For the most part, everybody complies.

Acting: Painful, utterly painful. Reid might be the best actor or actress in the movie. I’m fairly certain that’s all I have to say.

Special Effects: Nothing extraordinary. All standard, run-of-the mill stuff. Overall, the blood looked realistic, though. (Insert lower standards here.)

Keep an Eye Out For. . .

  • The car accident that leaves the “attractive young college students” stranded? It’s not shown. They cut right to the “attractive young college students” piling out of a van lying on its side. Does that scream “No budget!” or what?
  • How quickly into the movie we’re able to see Reid’s bra through her shirt.

The Straight Scoop: This is a ridiculous yawner, convoluted and un-engaging. It may have been striving for “creepy suspense,” but instead hit upon “pretty much sucks.” There’s an ebb and flow to any good horror thriller. This movie neither ebbs nor flows. Instead, it runs in a circle for 89 minutes, chasing its own tail. And the ending is about as original as your local cover band, not to mention thoroughly unexciting. By that time, you don’t care what happens. You just want to see those sweet, sweet credits.

Recommendation: It’s obvious that Reid is the main draw of Incubus. The filmmakers want young men to see her on the cover of the DVD case and say to their buddies, “Hey, Tara Reid. She’s hot. Let’s get this one.” That would be a mistake, fellas. (Besides, she’s not quite as hot as she used to be. All that partying is apparently taking its toll.) If you want to see a good movie with Reid in it, rent National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

Quality Rating: One-half scoop (for Reid’s current state of semi-hotness)
