Roman
Release Date: March 27, 2007 Tag Line: Sometimes death is not so natural. Description: Roman (Lucky McKee) is a lonely young man who yearns to find love, happiness, and companionship. Tormented by his ungrateful co-workers and trapped in a life of tedium as a welder in a local factory, Roman's one pleasure is his obsession with the elusive beauty (Kristen Bell) who lives in an apartment in his building complex. When a chance encounter with the young woman goes horribly wrong, a moment of frenzied desperation triggers a chilling turn of events leading to murder. As he teeters between deranged fantasy and cold reality, Roman's struggle to hide his grisly secret is further complicated by an eccentric neighbor (Nectar Rose) who develops an unlikely attraction to Roman and forces herself into his dark and tortured world. Running time: 92 minutes Rating: R Scoop ReviewPlot: The routine and obsessive ogling of his beautiful neighbor leads Roman strike up a conversation that leads to his apartment and then to the doom of the object of his obsession (Kristen Bell, who plays Veronica Mars). He then encounters the nymph-like neighbor (Nectar Rose) who is now interested in him and wants to get into his head for morbid conversations of suicide and death. She picked the right guy to talk to about this topic. Acting: Lucky McKee . . . you are a subtle genius. Bell plays her usual likeable self and carries her cute personality perfectly. Rose is convincing and adds a whole different dimension to an already layered film. Special Effects: The gore is minimal here, but the context in which the minimalism is used only adds to the movie’s generally eerie feeling. Keep an Eye Out For. . .
The Straight Scoop: Let it be known that Roman is what filmmaking is all about, ladies and gentlemen. This film could be used as a tool to show how to develop characters. There are so many details that we get to see about Roman’s life: his routine, how he sets his cigarette on top of his beer, his inability to carry on a conversation, etc. Roman is a person with depth, and we get to understand him and see his horror unfold. There are some absolutely hilarious scenes in this movie, too, and they aren’t accidental, either. I personally thank the director (Angela Bettis) and writer (Lucky McKee, who portrays Roman) on producing this piece of art. The reason that this movie is so diabolical is that the situations, the characters, and the events are portrayed in a real-world manner, not the over-the-top cartoon-ish way that “murderous characters” are written into most scripts. Recommendation: There is strong subject matter here. However, you won’t be horrified by blood and guts . . . that’s too cheap for this film. You’ll be horrified by the personalities and the situations in which they’re found. To enjoy this movie, you’ll have to be in an attentive state of mind. This flick will give you the willies and allow you to enjoy a story you likely haven’t experienced before. Quality Rating: Five scoops Riff Rating: Three scoops Reviewer: Drea Codispoti
