Stan Lee Presents – The Condor

Release Date: March 20, 2007

Tag Line: From Stan Lee, the creator of X-Men and Spider Man

Description: Tony Valdez (voiced by Wilmer Valderrama) is a college dropout who turned his back on his family’s robotics corporation to become a champion skateboarder. But when his parents are murdered and Tony’s legs are destroyed in a brutal beating, he uses his father’s experimental NanoBot technology to walk again. Now as the superhuman skater known as the Condor, Tony must reconcile a crime fighting conscience with his rage for vengeance. What is the missing component to his parent’s DNA regeneration formula? Why is their sinister ValTech partner creating a race of adrenaline-crazed killers? And who is the depraved super-villain sworn to destroy Condor? Maria Conchita Alonso co-stars as the voice of Mrs. Valdez in this all-new superhero sensation written by Marv Wolfman (co-creator of Teen Titans and Blade) from an explosive story by Executive Producer and comic book legend Stan Lee!

Scoop Review

Plot: During the introduction, Lee announces that he thought it was time for a Latin superhero. Okay, I’ll go along with that. Actually, the intro was interesting because Lee’s passion for creating such characters is very evident. He loves what he’s doing, and it shows, so I say more power to him. Just one question, Stan. Couldn’t you have put the kibosh on Lightspeed? We know you love doing this, but c’mon. That was painful. Anyway, the only reason we put this in the “Family” section here at STVS is because it’s animated. If it was rated, I would guess it would be PG-13. The language and violence are inappropriate for anybody younger.

Acting: Done fairly well. I just can’t believe that Maria Conchita Alonso is now doing voices for older women. When I was younger, she was the Salma Hayek of her day. Valderrama is fairly convincing as Tony Valdez. However, I do want to point something out. Tony Hawk is perhaps the most famous skater in the history of the world. Our hero’s name is Tony. He’s a skateboarder. His superhero name is The Condor. Tony Hawk . . . Tony Condor. What do you think? Am I wrong?

Special Effects: Traditional 2-D animation, holmes.

Ridiculous Dialogue Samples:

  • “Did that homely little b**tch design these?” (PG-13 recommended rating, Exhibit A)
  • One should always walk softly and apologize to the air molecules as you disturb them.” (Yeeeeaaaah.)

Keep an Eye Out For. . .

  • Believe it or not, a cartoon cameo appearance by Lee. Pretty cool, actually.

Parent Appeal: This will probably engage parents just as much as their kids, or more accurately, their teenagers, which is who this movie is really targeting. It’s almost a prime time drama in cartoon form, considering the language used and the number of people who die. Then again, it could also be a segment of the nightly news.

The Straight Scoop: Above average fare for the comic book and superhero crowd. Nothing extraordinary, but nothing as bad as Lightspeed. Will there be a sequel? Probably not. A TV series? Quite possibly. When you have 24-hour-a-day cartoon cable networks, anything is possible. Except, of course, affordable health care.

Recommendation: Not for little ones. If you pick it up for your kids, make sure that they’re bigger little ones.
