| The Fox and the Hound 2 Release Date: December 12, 2006 Tag Line: Old friends. New adventure. Description: Get ready to go a little bit country with Disney’s all-new motion picture The Fox and the Hound 2. The music of today’s hottest stars is center stage in this classic tale of friendship and loyalty. Tod and Copper still go together like an itch and a scratch, but when Copper gets a shot at the big time with a nutty group of hound dog howlers, their purebred friendship is put to the test. Experience an irresistible adventure featuring the stellar voice talent of Reba McEntire, Patrick Swayze, and Jeff Foxworthy and bursting with original music performed by Trisha Yearwood, Lucas Grabeel, and many more. The Fox and the Hound 2 combines music and comedy in perfect harmony. Running time: 69 minutes Rating: G (for all ages) Scoop ReviewPlot: Leave it up to Disney to create a new brand of sequel. The events in this movie actually take place between the beginning of the original The Fox and the Hound flick and its ending, when the main characters are fully grown. Think about it. The possibilities—as well as the number of sequels—are practically endless. Now that Disney’s created the perfect model for its DTV sequel machine, expect the assembly line production to begin (or perhaps more accurately, to speed up). Acting: I was rather impressed with Swayze, who I never thought would be effective providing the voice for a cartoon character. But he blended right in. And McEntire and Foxworthy are always enjoyable. The rest of the cast did a serviceable job. Special Effects: If Disney continues to use traditional 2-D animation for its straight-to-video releases, its potential for pumping out sequels truly is endless. Keep an Eye Out For. . .
Parent Appeal: There were some funny moments for parents, but all the “than a” analogies get a little tiresome, such as “busier than a farmer with one hoe and two rattlesnakes” and “as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs” and “that last note was flatter than a duck’s footprint.” After a while, it makes you “more tired than a grown man being forced to listen to lame redneck analogies.” And this from a person who considers himself to be, at the very least, a semi-redneck. The Straight Scoop: I approached this movie in a rather skeptical fashion. The original Fox and the Hound was marginally successful in the theater, and Disney usually only targets its more successful theater releases for sequel-dom. (Apparently, they’re going to let it all hang out now.) Although the plot is nothing extraordinary or even that original, I found the film more than palatable. Of course, it’s also just a little over an hour long, so that might’ve had something to do with it. For the most part, Disney’s offerings should be consumed in small doses for maximum effect. Recommendation: Should be fine for younger kids, but you might lose them past a certain age. Thumbs up for the under-10 crowd.
